Ragtime was the first form of African-American music to gain international popularity. Before hiphop, funk, soul, rock, jazz and the blues, there was ragtime. The deeply racist attitudes of the era meant that although the most sophisticated and authentic ragtime composers and musicians were usually African-American, they did not get to record their music.
